Two State Troopers Assaulted By Motorist During Traffic Stop

DURHAM — Two state troopers were assaulted after a routine traffic stop Tuesday morning.

Trooper C.J Carroll was attacked at the BP gas station on Hillsborough Road in Durham, shortly after stopping a driver for a traffic violation. Carroll is in fair condition at Duke Medical Center with broken ribs and a head injury.

Another trooper, J.C. Baker was also involved in the struggle. He was treated for a broken hand.

Isaiah Smith, 19, of New York, fled from the scene, but he was later discovered by the police department's canine unit. He is charged with assaulting an officer and heroin possession.

Two other passengers in the car were also taken into custody.
