JOHNSTON COUNTY — A bi-plane crashed in the woods next to the Johnston County Airport Monday evening.
The Steen Skybolt single-engine bi-plane veered off into the woods shortly after takeoff. The pilot, James H. Rhyne, 66, of Clayton, was pronounced dead at Johnston Memorial Hospital at 7:40 p.m.
The bi-plane was owned by a Raleigh doctor. Rhyne, a commercial pilot and flight instructor, was the only person on board.
The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation into the plane crash. The airport was closed for a few hours, but it has reopened.
