RALEIGH — State lawmakers are coming up with all kinds of ideas to help the state through its budget crisis, including a tax on soft drinks.
The proposal calls for a two percent tax on soft drinks, which is on top of the food tax consumers already pay. State SenatorEleanor Kinnairdsays the tax could raise $100 million.
The state passed a soft drink tax during the early 1990s, but it was phased out a year ago.
