3-Car, 1-Truck Crash Blamed on Wrong-Way Driver

FRANKLINTON, N.C. — An 18-year-old Franklinton man was hurt and police were searching for a driver who fled on foot after a collision that involved three cars and tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 1 near N.C. 56 in Franklinton early Sunday morning, the state Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Joseph DuBois was driving north on U.S. 1 when a car traveling south in the northbound lane hit DuBois's car head-on. His car spun and it and the car that hit it crashed into a third car and a tractor-trailer, police said.

The driver of the car that was going the wrong way was a male who jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot, Trooper T.L. Hunt said. Police did not have a description, however. The car is registered to a person in Arizona, but that was not the driver, Hunt said.

DuBois was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, but officials there had no word on his condition.

U.S. 1 was closed in both directions for several hours after the 5 a.m. accident.
