Parents Crucial To Preventing School Violence

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Parents must teach their children to speak up if they hear about threats of violence or see weapons at school.

In Southern California, both students and adults heard enough to warn officials about Monday's shooting Santana High School, but did not say anything. When the threat of violence involves a school, resource officers and principals are willing to listen to parents and help filter information.

"When we receive information from any kind of reliable source, we then have to make a judgment call," said Sanderson High School principal Cathy Moore. Bomb threats and weapon reports are acted upon quickly and quietly.

If your children are not talking, changes in their behavior and mood can be signs of trouble. Parents and teachers can work together to detect problems and provide solutions.
