Sunrise Services Mark Easter

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Even before Easter morning dawns, many faithful make their way to sunrise services at churches, cemeteries and other designated sites. This Easter was no different.

Following tradition, a sunrise service was held on the grounds of the state capitol in Raleigh.

The interfaith service was attended by people from many churches.

This year the worshipers not only got up before the sun rose to worship together, they had to remember it was the first day of Daylight Savings Time for the year.

"I like starting it at the same time as the very first Easter, when the ladies discovered the tomb was empty," says church member Lou Wells. "So we like to start at the beginning of the day."

The sunrise service has been a tradition for years at the capitol.

Approximately 500 people attended this morning.
