Runway Adult Nightclub A Go Near RDU Airport

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh leaders have given the green light to a Raleigh businessman wanting to open an adult nightclub near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The Raleigh Board of Adjustment voted 5 to 1 to allow "The Runway" to occupy property on Mount Herman Church Road.

Stephen Leonard, the owner, says The Runway will be an upscale nightclub offering Las Vegas-style adult entertainment.

The club, which Leonard said will cost about $2 million, is expected to open this summer.

Raleigh has not granted a permit for a new nightclub since 1992 when it allowed The Doll House to locate on Yonkers Road. At least four proposals for new clubs in Wake County were rejected because of restrictive codes.

Raleigh does not allow adult entertainment clubs to locate within 2,000 feet of residential areas, offices, churches, day cares, schools or other adult clubs.
