Henderson Tobacco Warehouse Destroyed by Fire

Posted Updated

HENDERSON — A charred frame is all that's left of an old tobacco warehouse inVance County.

The fire burned overnight at the Liberty Warehouse. Firefighters extinguished the last flames Wednesday morning. Now rubble is all that remains of the 50-year-old building.

The warehouse has been empty since it was damaged by Hurricane Fran, so officials are wondering why flames erupted late Tuesday night in a building with no power and no supplies.

Officials say it is difficult to tell in a situation like this whether the fire was accidental, or deliberately set.

The State Bureau of Investigation will be in Vance County Thursday to investigate. Officials couldn't explore the site Wednesday because the ashes still contain many hot pockets.
