18-Month-Old Fayetteville Girl Drowns

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — An 18-month-old girl is dead. Her babysitter says Khaleah Wall drowned. However, Fayetteville police are not confirming that just yet.

Fayetteville police are working the case as a suspicious death. They are not ruling out the little girl drowned, but they are waiting for autopsy results before a final determination is made.

Just before 9 p.m. Sunday, people who live on Campbell Terrace saw an ambulance and feared the worst.

Wall, known to friends as Pooh, was rushed away. She died a short time later. The little girl's mother was at work while the toddler was being watched by a male friend.

Police say he told them the 18-month-old girl was in the bathtub. He stepped away to answer the phone, and when he checked on her, she had drowned. Police are not so sure.

"There's some circumstances around the investigation to cause us to closely scrutinize the story, and we just want to make sure we don't miss something that's close to the investigation," said Fayetteville Police Sgt. Tim Hayworth.

Neighbors, including Shima Goins, are not as concerned about how it happened, just that Pooh is gone.

"It's just a baby. No matter what happened in this house, it's not that baby's fault," said Goins.

Police hope to have those autopsy results by Monday night.
