DURHAM — A Durham Doberman pinscher and his handler will soon be heading to Honduras to search for bodies of those killed in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch.
David Hancock, who works for Durham County emergency management, and his dog, Gus, expect to leave in the next few days.
The team has looked for drowning victims and murder victims, but Hancock says nothing compares to what they will face in Honduras.
"We worked floods in Charlotte a couple of years ago and helped find bodies there, but nothing of the magnitude I expect to see in Honduras," Hancock said.
Hancock said his family is more concerned with the diseases he could catch in Honduras. He said he has already been vaccinated for yellow fever, hepatitis and rabies.
