State Lawmakers Face the Final Hour

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — The clock is ticking for state lawmakers. North Carolina stands to lose $50 million in federal funds if our elected representatives cannot work out a compromise by midnight Wednesday.

Republicans and Democrats discussed the impasse in the House Chamber, but the real negotiation is taking place at the Governor's mansion. House and Senate leadership met with Governor Hunt to reach a compromise before the midnight deadline.

Lawmakers at the Legislative Building became increasingly optimistic.

"The Governor and our leadership from the House and Senate are meeting now for quite some time and I'm going to view that as a good sign. Evidently they are talking about a number of things so at this point I am hopeful that they will have an agreement by 12 o'clock."
