RALEIGH — Highway death totals never convey the grief a family experiences when a loved one dies in a crash. Roadside memorials mark a memory and a tragedy:
A life ended here,Someone remembers.A roadside memorial to another life that ended before it arrived.There's little left to show how violent an ending it was.Just a silent tribute.A flowery shrine.And a date marking the anniversary of a tragedy.Someone remembers a railroad crossing marked only by a heart.It is a sign reading "danger beware."A life ended here. And another.Joey rests in a peaceful place.Not here.Some refuse to pass this way for fear that thisreminder might remind them of the life that ended here.
