GOLDSBORO — About 200 people were evacuated from homes and hotels near the US 117/US 70 interchange after a gasoline tanker overturned and spilled its cargo.
The tanker lost control and flipped on a cloverleaf about 2 a.m. Saturday. The driver, who was not identified, was treated and released from a local hospital.
Clean-up of the 8,000 gallons of gasoline took several hours. Traffic jams of up to 4 miles were reported along US 70.
A Goldsboro police officer said such accidents weren't uncommon at the spot; at least twice a year, tractor-trailers flip over as they drive uphill at the interchange.
