Durham Petition Has 1,000 Signers

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Backers of an effort to reduce the size of the Durham City Council are pleased with the public's response so far.

In the first week of their petition drive, supporters have collected more than 1000 signatures. Five thousand signatures are needed to force a referendum on the issue.

One organizer said people call up asking for as many as 10 petitions at a time, saying they will collect signatures at work or by going from door-to-door.

The group wants to reduce the size of the Durham city council from 13 members to seven. They say that will make the council more responsive, more efficient and less expensive.

The group has until September 1 to collect enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.
