DURHAM — Governor Hunt is trying to get a grasp on juvenile crime, and he's starting in Durham. GRASP stands for guard response to alternative sentencing program.

The National Guard will work with youthful offenders in a boot camp style program. It's an alternative to prison designed to teach discipline.

"I'm really a pretty smart guy," said Brandon Young, a participant in the GRASP program. "It's just that I made one mistake, and I'm glad that there's this program. It shows me more discipline and respect and pride."

Durham's will be the first of 20 statewide programs. The state has set aside $1 million for the program.
