3 Fayetteville Officers Claim Victory

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — Three Fayetteville Police officers are claiming victory.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled in favor of former officers Greg Williams, Virgil Reeves and Karen Sweeney. The officers, who are black, claimed they were suspended, transferred or fired after they filed discrimination complaints.

The complaints sparked a chain of events in the city last year that led to the firing of the city manager and the subsequent ouster of several City Council members who supported his removal.

The ruling, issued June 30, has no immediate effect, but mediation or court action may follow.
