The robberies began last year in Cary, and there has been one each month so far this year. All occurred at NBC banks, except for one at a Centura Bank. Each bank is situated inside a large supermarket.
Wearing a baseball cap, the perpetrator handed a note to a teller demanding money and saying he had a gun. Seconds later, he vanished into the grocery-shopping crowds with the cash.
Raleigh police said they had formed a special task force to set up surveillance at various grocery store banks for the past six weeks. In addition, special alarms were installed to warn of a robbery in progress. It was such an alarm that led to Brindell's arrest.
Friday afternoon, the NBC Bank on New Bern Avenue was robbed about 4 p.m.
A dye pack hidden in the money exploded on the robber outside the store. Brindell's hands were stained with indelible red dye.
Brindell is likely to face additional related federal bank robbery charges.
Brindell was placed under a $700,000 secure bond and was assigned a court-appointed lawyer. His next court date will be June 24. ,MJ Ainsley
