Grand Jury to Look at Food Lion Employees

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — The Wake County district attorney's office is investigating a possible case of vigilante justice.

Jason Cort, 24, died after he was chased down by grocery clerks who suspected him of shoplifting.

The Food Lion employees caught Cort, and held him down until police arrived. The suspected shoplifter was taken to the hospital. At the time, police said rescue workers transported the suspect because they suspected he had been drinking. Cort died a few days later from head injuries.

A grand jury will decide Monday if the employees were too rough.
