Johnston County Gets New ER

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — At 7 Monday morning, a new emergency department will open at Johnston Memorial Hospital. It will offer state-of-the-art equipment and quicker response to patients' needs.

Its 26 beds will make it three times larger than the old emergency room. Doctors and nurses say they'll be able to respond faster to Johnston County's specific needs.

"We have a new chest pain unit designated specifically for those types of patients, and second, we see a lot of trauma patients because I-95, 40 and 70 all go through the county. And so we see a lot of trauma from car accidents," said Dr. John Guha, emergency room director. .

Johnston Memorial also plans to computerize its emergency room, and to hire more doctors and nurses.
