Campbell Trainer Cleared After Investigation
An athletic trainer at Campbell University is free to return to his job after being cleared of allegations of over-medicating student athletes in Washington.
Posted — UpdatedA 2004 investigation at the University of Washington was sparked by anonymous complaints that Craig Moriwaki handed out high doses of prescription drugs when he worked with that school's softball team.
The UW internal investigation found both Moriwaki and the doctor he worked under in Seattle, Dr. William Scheyer, at fault for overusing and overmedicating players.
Scheyer pleaded guilty to charges that he obtained prescription drugs by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception and subterfuge, and he surrendered his medical license. But Moriwaki never faced criminal charges in the case.
Moriwaki's national certification had been suspended until this week. The North Carolina State Board of Athletic Trainers received two anonymous complaints about his employment at Campbell but decided there was nothing to them.
He is free to work as an athletic trainer in North Carolina once he applies for a license, officials said.
