Meredith Graduation Held Sunday

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — The threat of bad weather shifted the scene of Meredith College's graduation ceremonies, but it was all sunny skies for the parents and other relatives on hand for the big day.

More than 500 students received bachelor's or master's degrees.

Originally, Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance," the processional music so frequently associated with graduations, was to be heard across McIver Amphitheater at Meredith's campus in West Raleigh.

The possibility of rain led college officials to shift to the Raleigh Civic Center. At 10 a.m. the students, wearing black robes and mortarboards, entered to hear their commencement address and to receive their diplomas.

The address was by Linda Finch, an aviation historian, whose topic was "You Can Soar."

In addition to receiving diplomas, Meredith graduates each receive a bible.
