CARY, N.C. — Investigators in Cary are trying to figure out what caused a fire at a housing complex.

Authorities said the fire started in the stairwell of a building at the New Kent Village Condominiums located near Kildaire Farm Road.

Residents in 10 occupied units were forced to leave the building. In some cases, firefighters had to use a ladder to get residents to safety.

"I went upstairs and knocked on the neighbor's door up there and ran down the stairs because it started to flame up pretty well," said resident Karen Johnson.

"It was scary, especially being stuck in the house for a second. We knew what was going on, but we couldn't get out, so that was kind of scary," said resident Bianca Chase.

Officials said no one was hurt in the fire. Some of the residents were allowed to return to their condominiums.
