Fayetteville Teacher Charged with Molesting Student

A teacher at a Fayetteville Christian school stands accused of sexually assaulting a student in his office. The teacher was a physical education instructor and basketball coach at Northwood Temple Academy. He was fired after the allegations surfaced in January.

Tuesday, he was officially charged and arrested at the extermination company where he now works. The mother of a girl who has charged the man with assault says she never expected this at Northwood.

One mother says her 14-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by her physical education teacher, 28-year-old Jason Lee Viar. The woman says Viar took her daughter into his office at Northwood Temple Academy and threatened her.

Police say it happened one more time before the ninth grader went to school leaders. Sgt. Tim Hayworth of the Fayetteville Police Department says there are multiple charges against Viar.

The girl's mother is angry that she wasn't contacted until the day after her daughter confided in the principal. She's also upset that something like this could happen to her daughter among people she is supposed to look up to and trust. She says she plans to sue the school for negligence.

Viar is being held in the Cumberland County jail on a $75,000 bond. School principal Symore Aultry says he is aware of the charges, but refused further comment.
