Investigators said that shortly before 1 p.m. a man entered SunTrust Bank at 1775 Dobbins Drive, near Highway 15-501, pointed a handgun at tellers and demanded money.
The robber then fled the scene in a green Ford Taurus, which police later determined to be stolen. The man then wrecked nearby on Sage Road, ran from his vehicle and was seen behind Lowes home improvement store.
Authorities evacuated the store after he entered it through a contractor's entrance, but did not find him. Officers did, however, find a jacket and handgun they believe belonged to him. Other items of clothing were also found inside the store.
Police said they believe someone in another vehicle picked up the robber at Lowes.
The robber was described as a thin black man whose face was covered by black spandex material. He was also wearing a knit cap and the hood of a jacket or sweatshirt on his head. Witnesses also told police that the man had red ink on the side of his head, which police believe to be from a dye pack that activated in the car.
Chapel Hill investigators are also working with Raleigh police to determine if an attempted bank robbery earlier in the day was related to the Chapel Hill crime.
