Winter Weather Not Likely For Triangle Area

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A system that earlier this week looked like it could bring some freezing rain to the Triangle likely won't, weather forecasters say.

There could be some sprinkles in the southern counties late this afternoon, but the more noticeable rain would be with us into the evening and overnight. The atmosphere is too warm to support anything frozen.

Southern Virginia, Roxboro and the Triad are expected to see some freezing rain mixed in -- and even then it won't be much. Several counties west of Greensboro are under a Winter Weather Advisory and are expected to receive freezing rain and some sleet.

Forecasters said that areas near Boone could receive as much as a quarter of an inch of ice from freezing rain. In the Triangle area, rainfall totals could range from .5 inches to as much as 1.25 inches in some spots, which will put another dent in the area's water deficit.
