Officers with the Raleigh Police Department, State Capital Police and N.C. State Campus Police searched the woods and dorms on the N.C. State campus after a man spotted outside Central Prison ran from them.
Authorities said that earlier in the day, a prison guard noticed a suspicious vehicle parked outside the prison. When the man failed to respond to the guard's questions, the guard called the capital police.
The car was determined to be stolen from Virginia, a spokesman for the Capital Police said.
The man ran down Western Boulevard toward the university and into the woods.
"There was a guy dressed pretty heavy -- like, he had a hat on and a big coat," one witness said. "And he jumped the fence and was rolling down a little embankment area. And after that, the cop jumped after him and rolled down and he took off running."
Authorities searched the campus but never found the man.
Police said no one was injured and that none of the buildings were ever on lockdown. No additional security measures were taken, a Capital Police spokesman said.
Additional guards were on duty Thursday at Central Prison, where a larger than normal crowd was expected as the state prepared for the execution of Kenneth Boyd, who, if executed, would be the 1,000th inmate in the United States to be executed since the lifting of the national moratorium in 1976.
