Police said a man stopped by the house and asked if he could go inside to make a telephone call. When a woman, who was taking care of her two grandchildren, answered the door told him that she would call the number for him, authorities said the man entered the house and assaulted the woman.
"At which point she started screaming and pushing back; and he got behind her and put his hand over her mouth," said Lesley Bennett, the victim's daughter.
Investigators said the man stole jewelry and money from the house and fled the scene. No one was injured.
Raleigh police have been canvassing the area and even passed out a description of the suspect at a roadblock Wednesday morning. They said people should be on the lookout for thieves casing their neighborhood.
While they are not sure if there is a connection, police said a magazine salesman had been reported going door-to-door in the neighborhood Monday.
"If they see anything unusual, call us to investigate," said Jim Sughrue, a spokesman for the Raleigh Police Department. "We'd rather have that, then to have an unreported incident lead to crime later."
The suspect is described as a black male, measuring 6 feet to 6 feet 2 tall, weighing 190 to 230 pounds with a dark complexion. The victim said he was wearing a long-sleeved yellow shirt, dark pants, a black head covering, or do-rag, on his head and white latex gloves.
