Worker Killed In Person County Industrial Accident

ROXBORO, N.C. — A man died in an industrial accident at a wood panel plant in Person County, authorities said.

, according to the Person County Sheriff's Department.

The accident happened when a contract worker was welding a catwalk on a piece of machinery beside a conveyor belt that was not on, according to Captain Mike Clayton of the Person County Sheriff's Department.

Clayton said that when the belt was turned on, the force from the conveyor belt pulled the man in, killing him instantly. Another nearby worker was able to get away and get help.

The plant was shut down until OSHA arrives to evaluate the accident.

The victim was identified as Allen Keith Whitfield, Clayton said.

The plant, which has been open since 1994, produces Oriented Strand Board, a wood panel that shares many of the strength and performance characteristics of plywood.
