RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a suspect late Wednesday night in the fatal stabbing of a Raleigh woman early Tuesday morning.

Raleigh police found 22-year-old Lauren Michele Redman outside her apartment building at 3010 North Walnut Creek Parkway at about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday. She died at the scene.

Byron Lamar Waring, 19, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of murder in connection with Redman's death. He is scheduled to make a first court appearance on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Police said the suspect and the victim knew one another, but did not say how. The case, they said, is still under investigation.

Court records show Waring has a past criminal history of misdemeanor larceny, public disturbance, trespassing and breaking-and-entering a motor vehicle.

Police have not said who called 911 early Tuesday. They were seen early Tuesday removing a piece of wood from the apartment grounds and, at one point, were talking with a man at the crime scene.

Late Wednesday afternoon, authorities also found Redman's 1997 green Honda Civic coupe at the 800 block of Barringer Drive. It is being examined for evidence.

Redman was an English major at North Carolina State University, but she had not taken any classes there for more than a year. She was also a graduate of East Wake high school, where she was a standout tennis player.
