Homeowners in Siler City may have to kiss their green lawns goodbye at least for the time being. Starting Monday, anyone caught watering their lawn will have to pay a $500 fine. Those who are caught three times will have their water shut off.
Plus, businesses in Siler City like car washes not on well systems have to shut down completely.
Monday also marks the start of water restrictions in Durham. Lake Michie, Durham's main water source, is nearly 12 feet below normal. If you do not follow the rules, officials said your water could be shut off.
For cities using the Raleigh water system, low lake levels at Falls Lake prompted City Council to put into effect similar restrictions. The restrictions started last week, but fines start going into effect Tuesday.
Chatham County is also imposing mandatory restrictions with a $50 fine.
