Mebane Man Accused Of Killing Off-Duty Deputy To Go To Trial

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — The trial of an Orange County man accused of stabbing to death an off-duty sheriff's deputy is set to begin Monday.

Investigators said Devin Scott Rigsbee, of Mebane, stabbed Hertford County Deputy Thomas Carrell Lewis during an argument alongside Interstate 40 in May 2004.

Lewis, of Windsor, died May 1 of multiple stab wounds to the back.

Rigsbee is charged with first-degree murder.

Three other men -- Phillip Rigsbee, Joshua Abrams and Eric Isley -- were in the car with Rigsbee at the time of the argument, police said. They are charged with accessory after the fact. Prosecutors claim all three tried to destroy evidence.

Rigsbee's defense lawyer, James Williams, characterized the fight as a drunken brawl and that there was no evidence Lewis was acting in his official capacity or that Rigsbee knew he was an officer.
