Investigators said they charged 26-year-old Anthony Liven Copeland, of Chapel Hill, on Thursday with the murder of Michael Stevon Hunter, who was killed in a drive-by shooting on Nov. 24, 1997, while standing in front of a church.
Kammie Michael, spokeswoman with the Durham Police Department, said investigators believe the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.
As of Friday night, Copeland was not in custody, Michael said.
In September, investigators also charged 25-year-old James Mark McClain with one count of first-degree murder in connection with Hunter's death. McClain is in federal prison after being sentenced to 22 years on charges of drug distribution.
Police said McClain has not been transferred to Durham to stand trial on the murder charge.
They added that the investigation remains ongoing.
