Wayne County Jail Guard Collapses, Dies

A detention officer collapsed and died Tuesday night at the Wayne County Detention Center, authorities said.

Ronnie Dean Kornegay, 49, of 144 E. Pine Forest Road in Mount Olive, collapsed while working at the jail and was pronounced dead at Wayne Memorial Hospital, authorities said.

Kornegay had worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office as a detention officer for more than 11 years, authorities said.

Mr. Kornegay was a good person and will be deeply missed around the Sheriffs Office. My prayers go out to his family, friends and all his co-workers. Rest in Peace.
