PRINCETON, N.C. — Horseplay behind the wheel left one man dead and his friend facing charges, police said Monday.

James Howell Jr. and James Holder were joking around outside a Barden Street apartment complex Sunday, when Howell stepped in front of Holder's car, Princeton Police Chief Ed Lewis said. Holder stepped on the gas and the brake at the same time, but his foot slipped off the brake pedal, Lewis said.

The car raced forward and pinned Howell against the apartment building, Lewis said.

Howell was airlifted to Duke University Hospital with extensive internal injuries, and he died at the hospital.

Holder will face a minimum charge of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, Lewis said.
