Police said that on Saturday, Carolyn Boyette, 57, got into an argument with her granddaughter, Tiesha Faison, at the home where they both lived on East Slocumb Street. Authorities said that at some point during the argument, Faison went across the street to the house where her great-grandmother lives, and that the fight continued.
Monique Simmons, the victim's cousin and Boyette's niece, said Faison had left her job on Friday complaining of a chest cold and that she wanted to go to the hospital Saturday and leave her two children with Boyette.
"Her grandmother, which is Carolyn, was tripping and didn't want to keep the kids or whatever," Simmons said.
Simmons, who lives with her great grandmother, said that Boyette pinned down Faison on the living room floor and choked her.
"(Boyette) said if she did it, she didn't mean to do it, and that if she had to go to prison, then she just wanted to go to prison and do her time," Simmons said.
When officers responded to the scene, Faison, who authorities said was seven weeks pregnant, was unconscious on the floor, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Boyette is in a Wayne County jail, charged with murder.
