DURHAM, N.C. — A former Durham Country sheriff's deputy has been indicted on federal drug charges.

Michael Owens, who owned La Zona Club in Durham, was charged with trafficking cocaine. Several other people were charged as co-conspirators.

After La Zona was raided by federal agents in October, investigators said they believed the club served as a hub for drug dealing. Search warrants detailed cocaine and marijuana buys in back rooms and bathrooms.

Owens had been a deputy for three years before being fired from his position shortly after the raid.
