CARBORRO, N.C. — An accused drunken driver charged with hitting a blind woman and killing her guide dog has been released from jail.

Carrboro police said Stephen Coffee, 27, jumped a curb and hit Danielle Iredale, 22, and her dog last Friday as she waited at a bus stop.

Iredale, who suffered leg and head injuries, is now recovering at home.

Coffee, who investigators said had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal driving limit, was charged with felony harming an animal, felony hit-and-run, driving while intoxicated and other violations.

As part of his bond agreement, Coffee is not allowed to drive.
