Posted Updated

HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. — A high-speed chase in a stolen rental truck nearly took a deadly turn Sunday morning, according to authorities.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, a Weldon police officer stopped a U-HAUL truck, driven by 48-year-old Patrick Shawe, along Interstate 95 near Roanoke Rapids. According to authorities, the driver sped away while the officer was pulling up information on the driver and the vehicle, which he discovered had been stolen.

A police pursuit began and ended west of Halifax County in a creek off of Highway 561 before the suspect was taken into custody.

Halifax Sheriff Jeff Frazier also said Shawe had cut his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt.

Authorities found heroin and crack inside the truck.

In addition to drug charges, Shawe is also charged with stealing a vehicle and resisting arrest.
