At one point, the shelter housed 460 evacuees from the Gulf region. Now, crews are cleaning up and working on providing help for the evacuees.
"Right now, we have 124 who are still housed here. The majority of those already have apartments. We are just waiting for churches to work with them to put furnishings in the apartments," said Wake County Health Director Gibbie Harris.
Many of the evacuees said they plan to stay in the area while others plan to move to area hotels.
Even those the shelter is scheduled to close Friday, officials remain on standby due to the threat of Hurricane Rita, which is expected to hit Texas by the weekend.
