Authorities Search For Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run

Posted Updated

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities in Sampson County are searching for a driver wanted in a fatal hit-and-run accident that happened at about 11 p.m. Sunday night.

Investigators say the driver of a truck knocked 56-year-old Jeremiah Hemmingway off his bicycle along Highway 701 and dragged him under the vehicle for about a half-mile.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a woman saw the truck pass by with something dragging underneath, but did not know exactly what she was seeing.

Troopers said Hemmingway was wearing dark clothes which may have made it hard for drivers to see him.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Highway Patrol in Clinton at
