Cumberland Authorities Arrest Man In Rock Assault

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff deputies have arrested and charged a Wade man for an incident that left two people seriously injured.

Joel Amone Liggons, 22, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods.

Liggons allegedly threw a large rock into the windshield of an oncoming car traveling eastbound on N.C. 24 early Tuesday morning.

Edith Mae Underwood, 58, suffered severe head injuries. Her boyfriend, 59-year old Harold Gilbert Pope was involved in a fight with Liggons and suffered multiple facial injuries as well.

Liggons remains in the Cumberland County Jail under a $56,000 secured bond.
