Johnston County Investigators Call 6-Month-Old's Death Suspicious

Posted Updated

CLAYTON, N.C. — Johnston County sheriff's deputies are investigating what they say is the suspicious death of a 6-month-old baby.

EMS workers were called to a home at about 1:15 a.m. to a home off

Ranch Road

near Clayton. When they arrived, they found a baby boy in dire condition. He was immediately rushed to WakeMed, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators spent most of Wednesday talking to family members, including the baby's 13-year-old mother. The family insists that the baby's death was an accident.

Investigators will not say why they are calling the infant's death suspicious, but said earlier Wednesday that they also have not ruled out that the death could be an accident.

The family told WRAL that he accidentally crawed off a bed where he and his mother were sleeping.

Detectives have not released any information about the condition of the child when EMS workers arrived.

"I feel bad. It just hurts me. I really did hurt me. I known he's gone to a better place," neighbor Minnie Forte said.

Authorities have not said whether any charges will be filed.
