ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Rocky Mount leaders are working on a deal that could rid them of a troublesome piece of artwork.

An artist in California wants to buy a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., even though some say it does not look like him. As part of the deal, the city must allow artist Steven Whyte to replace it.

Earlier in the year, Anna and Jeffrey Varilla, two sculptors based in Chicago, offered to create a new MLK statue.

If the deal goes through, Whyte said he will unveil his work Jan. 16, 2006, which is Martin Luther King Day.
