The federal building has been without a flagpole since it opened three years ago.
Town Manager Andy Hedrick said residents have complained to the post office and nothing has been done. So, he recently sent the postmaster a letter asking that a flagpole be erected. The letter said the flag in Fuquay-Varina is not getting the appropriate respect it deserves.
"Everyone in America deserves better," Hedrick said. "Anywhere the American flag is displayed, it needs to be displayed with honor and respect."
A spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service said a flagpole should have been included in the building design and for some reason was not. He said he understands the community's concern and will get the matter resolved.
Members of American Legion Post 116 hope it happens soon -- not just for veterans, but also for those in harm's way right now.
"I think they would be ashamed to see something like that," said American Legion Adjutant Gen. C.J. Means. "It's disrespectful to the flag."
The postal service said it could be September before funds are available. The town, however, is currently raising money to buy a flagpole for the post office.
