Phase II of the project is located on the north end of the American Tobacco complex. It will include the renovation of four old buildings. In addition, there are plans to convert an old coal shed on the complex into a glass-enclosed restaurant.
Built in the 1800s, the Bull building is one of the oldest structures at the American Tobacco complex. It is part of the latest renovations involving the project.
"We are taking the top two floors of the old Bull building and we are making 12 terrific ownership units," developer Bill Struever said.
In addition to 12 condos, 50 apartments will be constructed on the campus. A waiting list has already been set up to help fill the slots at the apartments. A number of businesses and restaurants have already settled into the American Tobacco campus and several others are slated for the near future.
Capitol Broadcasting Co., WRAL's parent company, is the developer of the American Tobacco Project. The company announced Tuesday that it is partnering with a nationally recognized firm that helped with renovations at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The firm will be responsible for developing Phase II.
Phase III will be located across Blackwell Street near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
