Officials Seek Money To Renovate Durham Athletic Park

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — The Bull City may ask taxpayers to ante up to help restore a historic ballpark.

Officials said the Durham Athletic Park is falling apart. They said the plumbing is bad, the electrical system doesn't work and the bleachers and scoreboard need an overhaul.

The city wants to restore the place and possibly turn it into a minor league baseball museum or venue for outdoor performances.

The Parks and Recreation Department estimates repairs could cost close to $2 million. It may cost another $2 million to convert the park into something else.

Parks and Recreation officials want the city to include the $4 million in a proposed bond referendum this fall.
