CLAYTON, N.C. — A construction crew working on Highway 70 ruptured a gas line Friday morning in front of Clayton High School.

Students were evacuated from the school and taken to the north side of the campus after a two-inch line that serves the school cafeteria was cut.

Westbound lanes of Highway 70 were closed, but eastbound lanes were open during the incident. All lanes of traffic were reopened by 11 a.m.

No injuries have been reported. Crews managed to cap the leak around 10:45 a.m.

Students were allowed to go back into the school by 11 a.m.

The gas line is expected to be completely repaired during the early afternoon, officials said.
