ABERDEEN, N.C. — Police in the Moore County town of Taylortown say a high school junior was likely speeding on a wet road when she hit a tree and died on her way to band practice Saturday morning.

A preliminary wreck report showed Allie Rabstejnek, 16, was driving about 65 mph in a 35 mph zone when she went around a curve on Main Street around 10 a.m., lost control and struck a tree.

Rabstejnek was trapped in the car and died at the scene.

A passenger, Joshua Mogensen, 18, was thrown from the car through the rear window and taken to an area hospital. He was treated and released.

Rabstejnek was a junior at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines. The school's principal, Joel County, said she was a popular student who was involved in the marching band and swimming.

"She was just a phenomenal kid – a good role model, a good student," County said. "The school is in mourning. This was a tragic loss."
