At Aldi, there are no brand names. You can bring your own bags or buy them. You leave a 25-cent deposit for a cart until you return it and you walk out with more bang for your buck.
"There are sometimes I can come here with a basket-full and spend $40 to $60 whereas I can get maybe 10 items at a Food Lion and spend the same amount of money," shopper Sherice Alston said.
Thrifty shoppers travel miles to shop at the only Aldi grocery store in Raleigh, but an effort to expand is meeting resistance in Cary.
"The area residents didn't want another grocery store since there are four or five within a mile, mile and a half of that site as it is now," resident David Forvendel said.
Neighbors who live near the new Lowes home improvement store are fighting a proposal to build an Aldi on the site. They said the outparcel was designated as a sit-down restaurant.
"In my opinion, a promise made is a promise kept and this is kind of a nasty bait-and-switch on the part of the developer," resident Kim Metcalf said.
"It's not the fact that it's Aldi going in there that's my concern. It's that we are now going back on the commitment we made," Forvendel said.
Residents are concerned that an Aldi would be more than double the size and bring in much more traffic.
