Teen In Custody After Chase In Durham

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham teen was arrested after an attempted armed robbery and chase.

Police said 19-year-old Bobby Durrell Newman approached someone with a gun, demanding money at 1301 Leon St. in Durham at an apartment complex. When the victim did not have any money, Newman left the scene in a white van.

Durham police later spotted the white van on Guess Road and chased the van to southbound Interstate 85 to Highway 15-501 towards Chapel Hill.

The white van later wrecked at the location of Morreene Road and Highway 751.

There were no injuries to other drivers or Durham police officers. Authorities said the chase never got above 75 miles per hour.

Newman is charged with attempted armed robbery, felony speeding to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, driving while his license was revoked, two stoplight violations and one stop sign violation.
